Need to fix solenoid or replace starter in 1998 Isuzu V6 Rodeo--is this do-able at home?

We need to change the starter in our 98 V6 4WD Rodeo. Starting to read about it online and suspecting this may be a garage job, not a home one. Has anyone done this at home? is it doable? If garage, any idea how many hours labor this involves? NOT a good time for us to get hit with $$ garage bill but car is DOA in driveway and that's no good either. Thx.Need to fix solenoid or replace starter in 1998 Isuzu V6 Rodeo--is this do-able at home?

its my first time changing a stater ,want to do it myself. How do i go about changing my starter on a 1997 volvo turbo 850?
Just make sure the starter is the problem. The transmission gear position sensors and the electrical portion of the ignition switches fail regularly and can cause a no crank condition.

first buy a new one remove battery cables jack up car put a block or stand under it slide under remove bolts hold on the starter same time twist or turn it let it down some remover wires and that might work with most cars sometimes they might be something in the way of getting to it or letting it down then you have to remove that as well some will just drop right out others will have to twist and snake it around most are pretty easyHow do i go about changing my starter on a 1997 volvo turbo 850?
Disconnect Battery. Pull out the radiator fan with the housing. You will see the starter on the side of the engine under the intake manifold. There are two bolts that go through the trans into the starter. Use a 14mm wrench or socket. On the back of the starter is a bracket that is held onto the block by a bolt with a 12mm head. Remove the wires from the starter and it will come right out. There are a couple of different starters. They will all work, but you may not be able to reuse the bracket that goes on the back of the starter. How do i go about changing my starter on a 1997 volvo turbo 850?
Disconnect the negative battery cable from battery.Remove the radiator fan by removing the two torx screws securing it.Remove anything attached to the fan and make note of location.Try to pull the rad. fan upwards carefully. The two lower torx screw securing the fan may need to be loosened but not completely removed. Some vacuum hoses need to be disconnected if in the way when pulling fan out and electrical connectors for fan.Once the fan is out the you'll be able to remove the wires and bracket from the starter motor. There are two bolts that secure the motor to the trans. bell housing.I believe it's a 14mm.The bolts are torqued down pretty tight.A box end wrench and another wrench to extend the length for leverage to break it loose.A ratchet and socket is can be used also.See what works best for u.When bolts are removed, carefully lift it up avoiding damaging any thing anything.Installation is the reverse order.Good luck!

Is your chevy an automatic or stick?

The reason I asked is that a manual transmission would pose a different set of circumstances as opposed to an automatic.

If you replace the flywheel of a manual transmission, you would most likely want to replace the clutch and clutch plate as well. Assure that you have a pilot tool when you do this. You would probably need to get a bottle of brake fluid, as you would need to bleed the hydraulic clutch after replacing.

You very well may need to remove/replace the exhaust pipe as well, unless it is far away enough from the transmission to afford you space as not to have to move it.

In an automatic, you would have to remove the transmission so, you would probably need to buy some ATF to replace what is lost when you disconnect the drive shaft and the transmission from the motor. Again, you may have to disconnect/replace the exhaust pipe when removing the transmission, depending on if your S10 is a 4 or a 6 cylinder.

You may not have to purchase a flywheel, any reputable auto shop should be able to refinish your current flywheel, but upon putting it back in you have to have it aligned correctly. If you do not have a repair manual telling you how to perform this, then it is not a shade tree operation, you should have it professionally done.

I own a shop, and think this; If its a 4x4 then it can get pretty difficult. On a scale of 1-10 it is up there at about an 8. If you are smart enough to change the starter, then I would say you could change the flywheel without any problems. You will need to make sure you have the vehicle secure (on jack stands so you don't get killed), have a transmission jack, or a couple of strong arms, and some tools to work with. You can purchase a Haynes Repair Manual from a parts store, or go to the library and check out the Chilton's Repair Manual that covers this job on your vehicle. The only fluid you may be concerned with is the clutch slave cylinder, but you should be able to remove it, and tie it up out of the way. You will need a clutch alignment tool. The bolts that hold the flywheel to the crankshaft is very important. You don't even want to break one of these off in the crank, or you will be in deep crap. It is a good idea to tighten these down even, in a crisscross fashion, and if they have a star washer on them, make sure it goes back. These bolts must weigh the same. Same thing for the pressure plate bolts. If you break one off, then you will throw the engine out of balance, and it will vibrate %26amp; eventally do harm to the engine. All of these bolts should be tightened with a torque wrench, and this way you won't break one off. If not, then an experienced mechanic should tighten these by hand, and not an impact wrench. Outside all this, you should be able to pull it off without any hitches. The main thing is take your time, do it right, and if you don't understand something, then find out from someone before you just put it in there anyway. This is where a book comes in real handy. The clutch disc can be installed backwards, so pay attention to how it goes. Use a spray can of brake cleaner on the flywheel, and pressure plate to get all the hand prints %26amp; greasey dirt off. Any grease or residue left on these parts will cause the clutch to jerk, and not work right.

Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

How to change a Bad Starter?

This morning my 2001 Ford Tauras starter went out. A couple of days ago it took 2-3 times to start for my husband. Then this morning it just wouldn't start at all. The radio works, windshield wipers, etc. so we don't think it's the battery. Just wondering if anyone knows if this is an easy fix to do yourself and what the best options are of buying a new starter. Thank you!How to change a Bad Starter?
If the starter turns the engine over, it's not bad. If not, It could be the battery or the charging system. Make sure your battery terminal connections are clean. How to change a Bad Starter?
if your asking the question you should not be changing the starter yourself get a mechanicHow to change a Bad Starter?
I would begin by taking it to a 12 step meeting.

OK, really. You can get a book from the auto parts store for your year and make and model of car for only $20. It will have step by step instructions for your car. While the operation is fairly straight forward, there are some cars that just want to be different, and difficult. Having the exact instructions for your car is a must. After removing the starter, take it to the auto parts store and have them check it first, before replacing the whole thing. It may just be the solonoid (Fancy word for a big relay on the side of the starter) and not the starter motor itself. That could save you as much as $195 by only replacing the damaged part, and not the whole thing. How to change a Bad Starter?
Measure the battery voltage during start. If it drops significantly (under 6 volts), it's a bad battery or a bad alternator (or bad wiring to the alternator).

If it is a bad starter, you disconnect the ground lead of the battery (to keep from welding yourself to the car). then disconnect the wires on the starter, remove the starter (a few bolts, but they're tough to get started), install the new starter, replace the wires, and replace the battery wire. 5 minutes if you know what you're doing, maybe 20 if you don't.

Careful - the starter is kind of heavy. Not something you can't hold in one hand, but it can break bones if it falls on your hand.

One of the best resources I have found for vehicle maintenance is the Haynes collection of books. Step-by-step details, with pictures, of how to do most any project for any vehicle. They can be found at any auto parts store and are very reasonably priced. Hope this helps.I need help on how to change my truck starter?
try going to chilton.com or haynes.com. if that dosent work then go to gm motors .com they have all the diagrams and pictures you will need to look for them.I need help on how to change my truck starter?
Probably not, but there are inexpensive manuals like Chilton's that can help you. Actually the job is pretty easy and straigh forward if you have any mechanical ability at all.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Diconnect the battery ground cable from the battery

    2. Jack the vehicle up at least 18%26quot; and place on jack stands

    3. Find the starter under the right rear side of the engine. Disconnect the large cable to the solenoid and then the smaller wire. If there is an additioanl wire tag the two wires as to the location and remove the other one.

Find the two bolts that secure the starter to the bellhousing. They are vertical and there is one on each side. There may be an additional bolt near the solenoid at the other end of the starter. Remove all bolts, ensuring that any shims are retained and their location noted.

4 Reassemble in the reverse order. Connect the battery cable and test before lowering the car.

probably is the starter. but just to be sure, you can bring it over to a shop, and they can do a test with an AVR machine to see if anything is wrong with the starter, alternator, or the battery without taking it out of the car.

i think its called an AVR machine...anyways, just ask them to see if its working. don't go to a dealer though, they'll overcharge you.How do you trouble shoot a bad starter on a 98 corolla. Can an ignition problem be elsewhere?
Maybe just weak battery, take your battery to auto part store and have them do a load test on it.

Do you know where I can find specific directions to change the starter flywheel on my '86 Ford LTD?

It's an '86 Ford LTD Brougham 3.8 v6 ect, ect... I bought the car about two months ago for $200. When I bought the car, the starter wasn't engaging the flywheel, because the starter was loose. I had already bought the starter, so I replaced it and the solenoid. Now, two months later, the starter is coming loose again, Earlier today it was very suddenly too lose to engage (but not to the point of falling off), so I tightened it back on. Two starts later it is coming loose again.

I'm going to purchase a pair of lock-nuts tomorrow, with hopes that will keep the starter from coming loose anymore. However, I am thinking the flywheel could have received some damage from this and however the previous owner was driving it before hand. Since I am taking the starter off tomorrow, should I go ahead and replace the flywheel, too? (Where can I find specific instructions?) How much of a debacle would replacing my flywheel be? I think I've got the tools and the know how...Or, I hope, I'm not sure which.Do you know where I can find specific directions to change the starter flywheel on my %26039;86 Ford LTD?
It's common for the threads to strip out of the bell housing.

Put in longer bolts and secure with nuts.

    Than call it good.

While the teeth on the flywheel (flexplate if auto) may have been damaged, they can take a lot.

To change it requires either pulling the engine or dropping the transmission.

The complete instructions are in the service manual.Do you know where I can find specific directions to change the starter flywheel on my %26039;86 Ford LTD?
The flywheel is mounted on the rear end of the crankshaft you will have to pull the transmission to get at it. As far as your bolts go it sounds like the threads are stripped. Make sure the studs, bolts, nuts are in good condition. There is no other reason for them to be getting loose. If it was getting knocked loose you would hear it.Do you know where I can find specific directions to change the starter flywheel on my %26039;86 Ford LTD?
If you have a straight stick which I doubt, it's not too difficult. You should've inspected the flywheel before installing the new starter. It looks like the gears are not meshing properly. Remove the starter and check out the flywheel for missing or damaged teeth. Also you might have the starter shop check, it could be defective. As far as how-to direction is concerned, get one of them Hynes or Chilton Car Manual. It should describe the process so that you can understand it.Do you know where I can find specific directions to change the starter flywheel on my %26039;86 Ford LTD?
Replacing the flywheel often requires removal of the transmission. are the vary least it requires unbolting the transmission to move it back enough to slid the old one out and the new one in. on the subject of the starter, I would pick up some locktight and use that on the bolts. this should solve the problem of them coming lose.Do you know where I can find specific directions to change the starter flywheel on my %26039;86 Ford LTD?
that would be your flex plate on an automatic transmission, and you have to remove the transmission, sure your up to it? to tell the truth, I wouldn't do it on a $200 dollar car, use some thread locker/lock tight on the bolts and if they snap off because your flex plate is warped of out of round it's time to dump the car, but then again I havent seen the car, it might be worth the work or it might be a used up piece of junk.

How about getting a generic manual for a mid-1960s GMC vehicle from your public library, like the Chilton's series? Most cars in the 1960s used alternators instead of generators and had the starter switch combined with the ignition key. If the manual includes basic electrical diagrams, you should be set.

The floor starter for the old classics are something that can be changed out if you update everything to 12v negative ground system and it would be the only way for the 1 wire alt to work also.

I have done this to my 62 Econoline van. I pulled all the old alternator wires off and disconnected them and capped them off. Then the 1 wire Delco Remy alt needed a few spacers to fit up and it works great, single 10ga red wire ran to positive on battery. I recommend a 10ga ground wire from the alt bracket to chassis ground also. 1 Wire alternator are known to burn up from having a bad connection.

    1. Need to know the model of key starter you are buying. Most of the time they just fit into a wire harness, it would be appropriate to know what model your were getting so you could cross over your wiring.

    2. On the alternator, I would do the same thing, match the alternator up with current application and run wires where they have to go.

Make sure you've got a good battery, battery cable connections and that the ignition switch is switching 12 volts down to the starter's solenoid coil. If you haven't done that, your starter may not be bad. Even a security problem on your GM could be keeping the ignition voltage from reaching the solenoid on the starter. There's many more reasons why a starter won't run than having a bad starter motor!!

nope not as simple as that. you have to put certain bolts in first, tighten them with a torque wrench and god knows what else. half the time the bolts break off and have to be re-tapped. this is one job i would have a professional mechanic do.How hard is it to change a head gasket?
you need to get a shop manual for your specific vehicle and read the ENTIRE process before you start. You will get an idea of what needs to come off and the tools needed. You may want to have your head inspected while it is off to make sure it isn't cracked, warped...

I would also heed others advice about broken and frozen bolts. They can be a real pain. How hard is it to change a head gasket?
You might just be simplifying it a wee bit.

Best to get a Haynes service manual or similar repair book, and follow the procedures outlined, and especially the sequence of bolt tightening, also the proper torque must be followed.

A torque wrench is a must.

Depending on the mileage of the vehicle, it might be a good idea to have the valves re surfaced while the head is off.

Since this may be your first time, just be careful and read the step by step instructions, then go for it, everyone that has done this had to start somewhere.,.Good luck. How hard is it to change a head gasket?
The new parts will not line up with the existing head, so get a new BMW or spend the money on another car...dont waste investing into the head gasket price and labor costs if applicable.

Doesnt always work when replacing gasket...new gaskets can leak as well. How hard is it to change a head gasket?
Heyy, yeahhh...removing the head gasket is piss easy. First you take the Cam Cover off then you remove the gasket - replace it, then bolt it all back up...but remember if you have the user manual for the car, look for torque wrench settings and look under cam cover for the measurements because you need to follow manufactures specifications :)How hard is it to change a head gasket?
will need the repair manual for your engine so can have the torque spec.and the bolt tightening sequence, when tightening the heads back down, and the right tools for the job if not already have?and if you have a v6 or v8 will be taking every thing off, down to the block,so basically the top half of the motor.lots of work and time.but if you have the time will save you a few hundred bucks doing it yourself, have done plenty in my day,

Anyone know how to change the starter on a dodge caravan year 2000?

You did not say what engine you have. The starter placement and bolting patterns are different between 4 and 6 cylinder engines. On the 4 cyl , the bolts are placed one going into the block from one side of the starter and the other from the block side going into the starter. You need to disconnect the neg cable from battery before removing the starter. There is a cable and wire harness at starter motor that you will need to disconnect after you remove the starter. With the V6 , there are two bolts holding the starter to the Transmission housing. You may have to deal with a bracket that goes from the housing to the engine block, also the cable and wire harness will be bolted to starter. Remember to disconnect battery cable before removing the starter.

DIY Instructions for Removing/Replacing the Starter on a 1st Gen. Honda Passport / Isuzu Rodeo with a 3.2L SOHC V6 Engine:

-- Remove and secure the battery's negative terminal.

-- Loosen the Motor Mount bolts.

-- Loosen the Transmission Isolator Block bolts (the 2 bolts that secure the Transmission to the Rubber Block that's located just above the Transmission Cross Member).

-- Disconnect the Front %26amp; Rear Drive Shafts (4 bolts each).

-- Loosen the Lug Nuts on the Front Driver檚 Side Tire.

-- Jack the front of the vehicle off the ground, just high enough to do a tire change ?and no more.

-- Secure the vehicle on Jack Stands.

-- Remove the Driver's Side Tire.

-- Remove the bolts that hold the Starter in place.

-- Jack the Motor and Transmission upwards, together as one unit -- SLOWLY %26amp; CAREFULLY -- just high enough to barely sneak the Starter out over the Frame Rail...

It's a whole lot better to have to fiddle with the Starter quite a bit, moving it in all sorts of positions in order to get it out (or even to disassemble it after it has been unbolted from the Engine, then remove the two halves), than it would be to jack the Engine/Transmission too high!

    *** Warning ***

This technique works a whole lot better if the Passport/Rodeo in question is already equipped with a 3-inch Body Lift...

With or without a Body Lift, some clearance issues may arise, such as (but not limited to) over-extending the Radiator Hoses, Brake Fluid Lines (most likely the one located on the bottom of the Brake Fluid Reservoir, which will pop off, spilling Brake Fluid all over the place), Hydraulic Clutch Fluid Lines (if the vehicle is equipped with a Manual Transmission), etc.

If you work very slowly and carefully, and watch out for the 榞otchas? it is *possible* to R%26amp;R the Starter on a Passport/Rodeo WITHOUT EVER TOUCHING the exhaust system ?where, most likely, the bolts are probably so rusted that they檒l either break or round off, thus making the whole task even more of a PITA than it is already.

Personally, I think the engineers at Isuzu that came up with the idea of placing the Starter on the Rodeo/Passport where they did should be slapped with a welder檚 glove -- but what can ya do?

Best of luck ?Hope this helps.

If you ALREADY have the RIGHT tools for the job, do it yourself. Much more satisfaction knowing YOU DID IT. If you have no mechanical knowledge whatsoever, pay for it. Shouldnt run you much more than 2 hours labor, dont forget to add in parts. Change your battery cable if possible at the same time. How much should labor cost for starter?
Book times depend on sub model addition specifications...

times for the 1996 Volvo 850

are ranging from .7 all the way up to 1.8 hrs....

which means this could become a really nasty can of worms for someone with minimal tools and not having this car on a hoist etc.

while for most cars a starter replacement is a no brainer...

Volvo's are a whole different thing ... believe me I have learned this thru the school of hard knocks by working on a few (Volvo's)

do not make mistake of taking advice from someone who hasn't worked on at least 20 or so Volvo's

FYI on many things I refer any Volvo's coming my way to a reliable and reputable shop I know that will do a good job ...

to make better use of my time and skills on easier ones.. less head aches

Take it to the shop... locally our shops are charging about $65 hr @ 1.8 that equals $117.00 for labor + parts ...goven you have what I call a status symbol car...

they're likely to hit you hard on the starter yep they did... just got off the phone with my local wholesale supplier...

My cost wholesale in Idaho with my tax discount it would run $240.00

List Price is a whopping $435.00

so you'ld be looking at $360.00 to about $560.00 parts ansd labor if you were here in Idaho

advice is go new or remanufactured on starter not used because of amount of time involved...

WaltHow much should labor cost for starter?
Many shops us a book rate method to determine the labor time x labor per hour. Some shops may just charge you the actual time it takes at a given labor per hour. Some shops will just give you a quote, a price they throw at you and if you agree. Shop around for the best price for labor but also get some recommendations of a reputalbe shop. That's your best bet.

How hard is it to change a starter on a mercruiser 3.0 liter inboard engine?

Depends on the boat. Some layouts are easy, some not. Here is the procedure:

    disconnect battery negative terminal.

Remove rear bracket from the engine block.

remove 2 mounting bolts from the starter body. If there are shims between the starter and engine block, save them.

    Disconnect wiring from starter.

Installation is the reverse, use new mounting bolts, use the shims. Do not over-torque the mounting bolts (approx 30 ft lbs).

I'd look at your replacement starter while its on the ground and then use that as a reference when under the car to find the bolts via the replacement starter's bolt hole locations...you may have to pull the replacement under the car with you and rotate it in your hands to get it to look like the one on the car before you can start to properly feel around for the bolts. How to change a starter in a 2001 dodge caravan?
The starter on these vehicles bolts into the transaxle bellhousing, with the bolts actually coming through from the trans side and threading into the starter. You will see the bolt heads just to the driver's side of the front engine mount. Look at the new starter, and you will see the two threaded holes near the bendix where they bolt in.

  • After changing starter, my car acts as if there is no battery.?

Two days ago the car had trouble starting.. I'd turn the key and there would just be a clicking noise. After a few turns the car would start and be perfectly normal. Then, today, it wouldn't start at all... Same clicking noise but wouldn't start at all. So, I bought a new starter, installed it exactly how the old one was installed. I don't know if this matters but I initially forgot to unhook the battery before I installed the new starter and I did get a bit of a shock.. but I quickly got up and unhooked it then finished the job.

When I got back in, thinking everything would be fine... I turn the key and nothing! No lights, no noises... As if there was no battery hooked up at all. The battery is a brand new red-top, there's no way that it's dead. I took it down off the jack-stands and tried to start it again and it started with two tries. I let it sit for a few minutes then shut it off and tried to start it again and now.... it's back to no power at all.

    Any ideas?

    Starter on 92 GMC Sonoma?

How do I go about changing the starter on my 1992 GMC Sonoma? It is hard as heck to get back in there to turn the bolts. I have never seen a starter on an older vehicle that was this hard to access. I have changed starters before, but this one I am having difficulty with. Can anyone tell me what is the best way to do this?Starter on 92 GMC Sonoma?
What size engine do you have and also is it 2wd or 4wd.........I will wait..

If equipped, loosen the retaining bolts and remove the skid plate.

Remove the retainers and the brackets holding the brake line to the crossmember located just behind the oil pan.

Reposition the brake line slightly in order to clear the crossmember.

Remove the crossmember retaining bolts, there are usually 3 on each side, then carefully lower the crossmember and remove it from the vehicle for access.

As applicable and necessary, remove the bracket holding the transmission fluid cooler lines to the flywheel housing, brace rod to the flywheel housing and/or the lower flywheel housing.

Remove the starter-to-engine block bolts. When removing the last bolt, be sure to support the starter to keep it from falling and possibly injuring you.

On some vehicles, even with the crossmember removed clearance for starter removal is tight. As the starter is lowered, it may be necessary to rotate it upside down in order for the end to clear the motor mount, then lower the nose behind the bell housing and rotate it back so the solenoid is on top and the starter may be removed.

Carefully lower the starter and shims (if equipped) from the vehicle.Starter on 92 GMC Sonoma?

Does anyone know how to change the starter on a 1986 350 four trx?

The hardest part is remembering how the sepentine belt goes back on. Draw yourself a diagram. One of the pulleys the belt rides on is a tensioning pulley. If you pull on it with a wrench it moves the whole pulley and makes the belt loose. Remove the belt. There is a wiring harness that connects to the starter. Remove these wires. There should be 2 bolts that mount your starter to a bracket which is mounted to your engine. Remove these bolts and pull the old starter out. Bolt down the new starter. Attach the wiring harness. Using your drawing on where the belt goes replace the belt. You will need to move the tensioning pulley with a wrench again to get the belt back on. This assembly is self adjusting. You're done!
