While the operation is fairly straight forward, there are some cars that just want to be different, and difficult. Having the exact instructions for your car is a must. After removing the starter, take it to the auto parts store and have them check it first, before replacing the whole thing. Measure the battery voltage during start. If it drops significantly (under 6 volts), it's a bad battery or a bad alternator (or bad wiring to the alternator).
If it is a bad starter, you disconnect the ground lead of the battery (to keep from welding yourself to the car). then disconnect the wires on the starter, remove the starter (a few bolts, but they're tough to get started), install the new starter, replace the wires, and replace the battery wire. 5 minutes if you know what you're doing, maybe 20 if you don't.
