It is a pain in the rump!
You need basic hand tools and tiny hands to fit in the area where the starter is.
Be sure to disconnect the battery first!How to change a starter on a 1996 nissan maxima?
1- disconnect battery
2- remove the power lead wires going to the starter
3- remove the bolts that hold the starter in and remove stater
4-reverse this order for the re installation of starter
5- Good Luck....not much room in there
