If you can't identify where the starter is, I suggest you get a Haynes manual.

The starter is between the engine %26amp; the gearbox bellhousing, and will be fed by a heavy red lead straight from the battery. Don't touch anything until you've disconnected the battery. How do I change a starter motor on a Ford Escort mk 6 {1995)?
The starter motor is a round unit about the width of a 2 litre water bottle. It will be sited so the spindle part can connect with the main flywheel - and it is usually secured with 3 bolts.

The whole unit is about 9 inches long. It will have 2 cables coming from it - one going to earth and the other (LIVE) GOING TOWARDS THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT.How do I change a starter motor on a Ford Escort mk 6 {1995)?
