What is involved in the changing of a Starter?

I think that mine may be %26quot;On its way out.%26quot; I also dont understand the difference between a %26quot;Starter,%26quot; a %26quot;Starter Motor,%26quot; and an %26quot;Ignition (Maybe Ignition = Key, but Starter may be going out.. sometimes it starts irregularly, no real pattern.. Starter may be weakening, ill do Tune-Up First though.)

So i have to take apart the Steering Column? How hard or easy is it?

Thanks... 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais 2.5LWhat is involved in the changing of a Starter?
starter replacement has nothing to do with anything inside the vehicle....it is bolted to the transmission were the engine and transmission meet.....and yes the starter is sometimes call starter motor because that is what it is a motor that starts ur engine......

on that vehicle its 2 or 3 wires to disconnect and 2 bolts and then pull out the old 1 and put the new 1 in its place.....

i wud suggest buying a repair manual preferably haynes so that u will have step by step directions....good luckWhat is involved in the changing of a Starter?
first of all take it in to a service and have them test your charging and starting system out before going part by part until you get the right one replacedWhat is involved in the changing of a Starter?
As the previous poster said, the starter is on the bellhousing and depending on how it is mounted could be on the radiator side or the firewall side of the engine bay. The starter and starter motor are the same thing, GM vehicles have a starter solenoid mounted on top of the starter. You may have a bad solenoid or bad brushes. A tuneup will do nothing to correct the problem with your starter, if you don't know what the problem is take it to a shop. What is involved in the changing of a Starter?
the starter motor is attached to the bellhousing not the transmission

i recommend you having someone testing the battery first.

you may only need to clean the terminals and top it up with fluid in a best case scenario.

while you are at the auto electrician ask them some questions like you did now. What is involved in the changing of a Starter?
No you don't have to take apart the steering column

A starter and starter motor are the same.

Locate the starter. First disconnect the BATTERY.then disconnect the wires from the starter and then the starter and replace in reverse order.

But if you can't figure the difference of starter and starter motor maby you should hire someone to do mechanical repairs for you. What is involved in the changing of a Starter?
i recommend going to someone who knows cars. so you dont spend pointless amount of money. What is involved in the changing of a Starter?
I am a bit older than you probably, but as far as I know the starter is a hand crank you push onto a shaft located in your front bumper. You turn this crank until the car starts. %26quot;Starter Motor%26quot; is a way of saying %26quot;starting your motor%26quot;. %26quot;Key%26quot; is a little tiny metal piece that fits a groove on the shaft. Hope this helps.
