Help, my 86 GSXR 1100 grinds when I try to start it!!!?

I have a 1986 GSXR 1100 and it is grind when I try and start it, any ideas on what that is, how hard is it to change a starter which I assume it is and also any way to bypass the starter to make sure that is what it is. It tries to start but makes a terrible grind/screech sound when I turn the key. Please help!!! Thank you.Help, my 86 GSXR 1100 grinds when I try to start it!!!?
the bendix is hung, try tapping the starter with a wrench while starting itHelp, my 86 GSXR 1100 grinds when I try to start it!!!?
-The most common problem would be the starter clutch is worn out. $170 + oil + labor.

-Another problem coud be the starter motor %26quot;reduction gear%26quot;. $35 But if that gear is bad, then the starter motor's gear is bad also and the starter motor will need to be replaced / repaired. $350 / $150

-The next possibility would be the starter motor - sometimes the internals when old, a piece will chip off. That piece will chip off another and the problem spirals out of control. But that would cause the starter motor to stop working all together.

-Remove the starter motor from the bike and check %26quot;it%26quot; (remove the two bolts and pull it out of the engine. It might need to be pryed out with a screw driver. Attach jumper cables to battery positive and starter terminal. Then the other cable to battery negative. Hold the starter in one hand and touch the jumper cable to the starter, where it mounts to the engine (hold the starter firmly. It's going to jump a little, due to it spinning fast).

-That will help you narrow down the problem. If the starter motor is bad, then you just discovered the problem. If the starter is good, then the problem needs further investigating.

-The starter clutch and gears are inside the L crankcase cover if you want to take a look (drain the oil before removing the cover). It might be somthing obvious that you can see.Help, my 86 GSXR 1100 grinds when I try to start it!!!?
Just push start it man, put it in first, pull the clutch in, push and run along side it as fast as you can, hop on and dump the clutch as your butt hits the seat!

You need probably just need to tighten/adjust the starterHelp, my 86 GSXR 1100 grinds when I try to start it!!!?

  1. Okay....my starter ran perfect then one day it dragged....it sounded like a weak battery or rrrrrr....rrrrrrrr.......and barley wanted to turn it over. I bought a new battery thinking it was weak....no!
Then I thought the starter relay...bought one for $14 on Ebay....no!
Finally I cleaned and tested the cable....made sure they had less than !ohm resistance......they were fine.
I pulled the starter out and took it apart....the magnets had fell against the armature and were dragging it down.......making it seem as if I had a dead battery/or weak battery. No rebuild on that...so National had a new starter for $179....put it on fired it right up! Hope this helped.
